Abstract

In the study of Qur'anic interpretation, Qawa'id Tafsir plays an important role in understanding and determining the meaning of verses. One of the linguistic rules is the rule of al-wasfu (nature) which functions as a limiter of meaning (mukhasshisah) or can also play a merely explanatory role (muwadhdhihah). This variation in function produces various interpretations, as seen in QS. Al-Baqarah verse 2 in the phrase "hudan lil-muttaqin" which will be the focus of this study. This study aims to analyze the application of the rule of al-wasfu through a comparison of Al-Zamakhshari and Wahbah Az-Zuhaili. The method used in this study is qualitative with library research and comparative descriptive style. The results indicate that that Al-Zamakhshari understands the rule of al-wasfu as a limiter (mukhasshisah) resulting in an exclusive meaning, while Wahbah Az-Zuhaili understands it as an explanatory (muwadhdhihah) so that the meaning of the verse is more inclusive. This difference in application confirms that changes in the function of the al-wasfu rule are greatly influenced by the interpreter's approach in his interpretation and are part of the dynamics of interpreting the Qur'an.
